Pros

Company has been around for almost 100 years with a very strong financial rating. Job security is very high, they don't do layoffs and rarely fire employees. If you work hard and are willing to move, they will give you the opportunity. They don't limit you to one specific line, so you have the ability to learn a lot. The Christmas and Incentive Bonus programs are fair and can be pretty substantial.

Cons

If you want to get promoted you to a higher position you probably will have to move (unless you are in Home Office). This is understandable as there are only so many positions in the branch office. While the benefits and bonuses are great, the pay is below average for the industry. Some complain about the business attire (shirt and tie for men), but it really isn't that bad.

Advice to Management

Continue to promote younger, driven employees. Base raises on merit, allowing for higher percentages for those who earn it. While the security is great, it doesn't mean you can't get rid of the dead weight who are just there for a paycheck.

    Pros

There are a lot of nice people that work there; for the most part, people are very friendly, and it does give that "family" atmosphere. Exceptionally stable and predictable. You can argue that the pay isn't competitive, but considering the work week is 37.5 hours and there is little expectation of working outside of those hours, the pay is very fair. There are various bonuses, benefits, and retirement that make the pay reasonable too. If you're looking to start your own business, or generally want to focus your life's attention on something other than your work, Auto-Owners is a great place to be.

    Cons

Auto-Owners is structured like a lot of big companies - it's a huge hierarchy of management, and the farther you get up the chain, the less connected those people are to the real world. As a result, any type of progress is incredibly slow. Promotions are based on time worked, so there are a *ton* of managers that - while usually friendly - have no experience in actually managing people, and have no incentive to improve. There are very few managers who have the knowledge and spine to say no to their superiors, and everyone suffers as a result. The company strives to be "professional" with professional dress, but the irony is that the company doesn't act professional at all. Software quality, while improving, is not a priority. Anyone with actual talent either leaves or gets sucked into whatever the current "favorite priority project" is, then leaves. That means there are a ton of mediocre employees who just want to put in the bare minimum effort, and avoid any kind of improvement. Job descriptions are a secret. Seriously, you can't see your job description without asking your manager, and I'm not sure there's any way to see other people's job descriptions. This is the kind of decision making that goes on at Auto-Owners.

    Advice to Management

Start hiring managers from the outside. Stop the inbreeding of "The A-O Way" which is a joke, and seriously holding back the company's progress. Listen to your associates - all of the company's recent IT failures could have been avoided if you had listened to warnings of people actually doing work, and not a salesperson trying to sell you something.
