I worked at AutoNation full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

People who are patient enough to get past a rather lengthy pre hire screening are likely to be hired. If you are a commissioned employee and can produce under the circumstances presented at your place of hire you may get shipped to one of the poorly performing dealerships as a manager. I found it difficult finding even 20 words to put in the pro category. It's a job and not much more.

Cons

I was employed at 3 different dealerships owned by AutoNation group as a service manager and service advisor. AN entered the Dallas market opening the used car super centers. Nationally AN decided they should be in the new car dealership business and closed all opf the used car operations. They bought a large number of dealerships including many in the Dallas market. In time they wound up closing many of the domestic dealerships. I was employed at one particular dealership when AN purchased it and later when they sold it. The dealership was both 1# in their market brand and award winning under recent private ownership. The employees had worked long and hard to get it that way and were proud of it. Many employees were long term. AN quickly set about changing everything. Soon enough they proved they did not know what they were doing and contiued to prove it until they sold the dealership. The changed pay plans, processes and turned over the entire sales force, finance dept, aftermarket sales, every sales manager and general manager as well as many parts and service employees. Many departing employees headed directly for our nearest same brand competitor taking their large customer base with them and our competetor became #1 . The dealerships performance was simply embarrassing and dismal during AN ownership. Those employees that were still there, some of them had been in that store up to 20 years were asrrogantly referred to as" long term entrenched employees". After about a decade AN sold it and the new ownership returned it to its #1 status in about a years time. AN now believes that they should shift focus to high end import dealerships. With ANs track record of turning Dealerships into real estate only time will tell.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

AN is an organization top heavy in process but low in compliance from store to store. AN pushes process relentlessly and then one day simply drops it, ignores it and points at the people who don't work for them anymore for blame. They quickly shift focus to something else that is in turn pushed relentlessly. The company lacks sorely in execution but focuses on repetitive redundancy. They are notorious for high employee turn over. Pay plans change often. Sometimes they are so complicated that not only is the employee confused but even the payroll clerk can't reliably get the pay right before its printed on a check. There are many, many people at all levels of employment who don't have a clue what they are doing. The district managers are so saturated in corporate drivel that it's impossible to have any kind of meaningful conversation with them. It's almost like an employee should forget any experience they may have in the business because nothing can prepare you for what they have planned. They were right. The controllers are a rude and disrespectful bunch. They have some kind of power trip going on in their minds. They seem to feel like you should be degraded or punished for needing to talk to them. AutoNation is simply disregarded by their competition as the subject of many a joke in the automotive industry. Be prepared for ridicule when you apply for future employment elsewhere. My experience with AN is that they don't know how to get the most out of their businesses. They wear employess down into a pattern of still showing up but with no hope. AN won't learn from experience because they are too busy turning over people and curing everything with a whole new process that don't work. Hey guys it's selling and fixing cars. Pay attention you might learn something.

    I have been working at AutoNation

    Pros

    Generally great group of IT people to work with who have solid skills and knowledge. Benefits are good, and management has shown its commitment to employees by paying bonuses missed in a down year in a following good year. Location is attractive, and the views from the top floors are a plus. There is no cafeteria on site however and the food nearby is generally expensive and subpar.

    Cons

    Requirements gathering and sign-off process is very weak, leading to lots of confusion over the project life cycle. Also, business sponsors are usually not forced to stick to initial commitments. Staff is asked to work on many things at once, with load balance usually coming as an afterthought. Compensation is average, and hours can be excessive at times. Also, the org structure is so flat it leaves little room for management opportunities.

    Improve compensation and/or career advancement opportunities so that top staff doesn't go elsewhere.
