Dissapointing! I expected so much more from the #1 automotive retailer in the country.

I worked at AutoNation

Pros

Non-rigid work schedule (ex: arrive around 8:30 and leave around 5:30). 12 days off from the beginning. Nice break-room. Multicultural corporate environment.

Cons

Completely disorganized and no accountibility. Decisions seem to be made only at the very top level of management, otherwise subordinates do not respond to new implementations. The company is run like individual franchises instead of as a corporation. The DMS software used is lousy.
Employees have to wait 6 months to be eligible for health ins. benefits. The company is not focused on training and developing its employees.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

In addition to hiring people with education, like myself, ensure that employees either have experience at the store level or incorporate training to reduce detachment. Hire the right people, pay them well, and foster their development (train). Make the appropriate changes top to bottom.

    Pros

Free garage parking at the tower in downtown. Working in sunny Florida.

    Cons

Their nightmare CRM system, where crap code is deployed because developers either don't know (most likely) or don't have time to optimize and load test their code.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Outsource your jobs to Mumbai. No one there can do a worse job and they can do it at a fraction of the cost, especially considering the current stock options and bonuses given to senior mgt.

I have been working at AutoNation

    Pros

Large Company, Large Inventory (for car sales), Talented Employees, Some external perks (discounts on merchandise from other vendors.), Several dealerships/locations can help if a location change becomes an issue.

    Cons

The industry can be known for back-stabbing, the pay plan is poor in comparison to dealerships owned by smaller and less corporate groups, the health insurance benefit options are costly and do not provide sufficient coverage, the hours are generally 50+ and in an economy where auto sales has declined, your draw works out to be less than minimum wage and your commissions may not come anywhere near what you could be making hourly (more industry related), advancement within the company is not what you know, it's who you know.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have some talented employees who are square pegs being forced to fit into round fittings - not every position should have a payplan based on a template.
