Pros

change itself.... great buzz and very fast paced while very rewarding. Get to work on integrating, supporting and selling award winning new solutions year after year for the biggest best customers in the world. This is a company that rocks and has rocked since start-up (I’ve been here for 10 years so I’m biased I admit).

Cons

change itself (depending on your character type), the great paradox about people is that they’re creatures of habit, but when habits become ingrained people go stale like old socks... evidenced by disinterest and a moaning complaining attitude. What people need is ‘change’ to stay interested, motivated and engaged, but not everyone thrives on ‘change’ because they fear its consequences. So best and the worst things about Autonomy is ‘change itself’ because It’s a constantly changing environment. Lots of people love it but those who fear change hate it and tend to spend their time moaning complaining about it. I’m not saying everything is great… don’t get me wrong, but the benefits of change far outweigh the negatives.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

we do need to keep recruiting the good people and get rid of the complainers who hate change. Lots more communication of what has changed and what’s going to change would help beyond just the quarterly or so briefings.

    I worked at Autonomy

    Pros

    Autonomy is the leader in the enterprise search market, especially after acquiring its biggest competitor Verity. The culture of the company is very sales-driven. They are more interested in selling software than selling services- which is great! They want to go forward and expand their partner model in Microsoft-fashion. If they can build a service community that depends on the company's continued success it will drive market-share and the company's presence will expand organically. Their technical force is divided from their sales-force, which is not the norm in pre-sales. What it does allow for is greater dynamic asset allocation, which means when a pending deal needs an injection of talent or manpower it is more readily available than in a company that has its tech resources tethered to specific sales-people or regions.

    Cons

    There are high demands on your time. High-pressure as the quarter comes to a close. Their client support has gotten better and could improve even more. They can do more to improve their brand. Autonomy is not a household name but that is mainly because the average household has nothing to do with "enterprise search"! However if they devote development time to more public-facing projects (a good example is Blinx, which is IDOL-driven) they can become a part of the general public's consciousness- and that can only lead to greater success.

    I worked at Autonomy

    Pros

    Autonomy is a fast paced company so caters to road warriors. They generally pull younger people out of college for their technical positions as these require being at customer sites weeks and months at a time. Other positions such as sales still require at least 50% travel. They do pay well so the work hard get paid well component is in place. If you are a person who enjoys different types of challenges on a consistent basis then this would be a good place to work for. They offer many different solutions and are always open to having their employees find a niche with a particular product.

    Cons

    If you don't like to travel probably not the company for you. Travel for sales, technical, and marketing on a consistent basis. No matching 401K (not that it matter much nowadays!). There tends to be some lack of communication between upper management and their workers. There really isn't a solid "chain of command" where reservations and issues are easily resolved. Things tend to fall in a black hole so a problem you identify more often than not becomes "your problem". Most of executive team in the UK are very successful but not overly willing to get input from everyday employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    I think overall their strategy is very successful (take a look at their stock on the London stock exchange). That being said I think they leave money on the table through lack of training and need to listen to their employees to make the work environment a little bit better.
