Come work for Autonomy - a wacky company, but , but what a highly-regarded and successful company if you can put up with

I have been working at Autonomy

Pros

- a Cambridge/English company doing things its own way and taking on the world
- the chance to work with the world's leading companies on genuinely world-beating software
- Christmas party weekend in a foreign city (Lisbon, Dubrovnik, Venice, Rome...)
- due to the flat structure, everyone comes in as a manager, managing yourself with only infrequent input from above. Both a pro and con (see below)

Cons

- little or no direction from line manager on where this is all going. Entirely unavoidable situation due to the flat structure mentioned above

Advice to ManagementAdvice

- as great as it is to be different and not bow down to conventional ways of doing things, still tone things down a little bit - some of the ways in which the company is run are a little too wacky even for my tastes

    Pros

    Could look good on your CV
    Free lunch on a Friday

    Cons

    Where do you begin - the list is potentially endless!
    The company is run like a start-up - every decision no matter how trivial has to be approved by one of a few of the upper-echelon managers.
    General employees (sales/dev/support/etc) are treated as a throw-away commodity and are over-worked until they burn out or get fed up and leave.
    Middle management have no power to do anything useful - they get grief from the staff under them about the work & environment but have to sing a happy tune to the executives so as not to draw any unwanted attention.
    Nothing is managed in a pro-active manner - everything is run as a fire-fighting operation, including some very big projects.
    They regularly acquire other companies, not so much for their technologies but to get their customer lists - not surprising as their selling strategy seems to be tell the customer "yes, we can provide that - in fact we have it already" then fob them off while dev staff frantically cobble together some flakey solution that gets shipped to the customer - definitely a "take the money and run" approach.
    Customer facing staff are pretty much guaranteed not to be able to take any holidays in the final 3 weeks of any quarter (and YES that does include Christmas) as this is when the final push for sales etc is made and God forbid that the company didn't make the sale in the last few days of the quarter beacuse someone was on leave with their family.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Start running the company like the multi-billion dollar business its supposed to be and not like some 10-man outfit - if you can't do that then step back and employ some people who can.
    Also, listen to (and value) your staff. If you want to be one of the leading software companies in the UK/World then you need to appreciate the staff you have and the potential that they offer the company.

    Pros

    * Free breakfast on Wed and free lunch on Fri
    * Free soda, free coffee, free milk
    * There are some good people

    Cons

    * The company doesn't care about the customers and the employees
    * To ensure the stock price can continue to go up in short-term, the company doesn't invest in the products and the people. There are severe shortages of people, systems, and infrastructure to support the business. Products and services are not adequate to meet customer needs. Angry customers call and scold the client facing people all the time
    * Top management only knows how to threaten the lower ranks. Basically, employees are not empowered to do the work, and not provided the tools to do the work. But if the work cannot be done, there is always the threat of firing.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    * As many have mentioned here, Autonomy has the products to be a big player. Timing is right and the product sets are right on. Unfortunately, the management team is not experienced in managing the company and lead the employees. Few employees are satisfied.
    * Be more long-termed focus. Invest in the people and the infrastructure. Otherwise, people will be burnt out and the company will hit a snag.
