Pros

A brilliantly conceived product with very little competition in a marketplace, poised for explosive growth! Combine that with a team that is smart, passionate and driven to success, and you can understand why Avalara remains one of fastest growing companies in the country.

Cons

In a company of this size, you've got to be agile and flexible enough to handle quickly changing priorities, with enough tenacity to get the job done. If you can't handle ambiguity or multi-tasking, or require a highly structured environment, this would not be a good fit.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Note to CEO, Scott McFarlane: You are an extraordinary speaker. I will always remember in my first week on the job back in 2011, there was a company meeting (as there is every year). You got up and lit the crowd on fire. I have worked with many amazing people over the past 25 years, but have truly never seen anything like it. You have a gift - fed by your passion for this company and the fire in your belly.
Keep connected to your boots on the ground. All of them. Together you will make this happen. Big Time.

Not a startup, not even a startup approach, but they sure think they are.

I have been working at Avalara full-time

    Pros

Opportunity to shine. There's a lot of work to do and very few people who can do it.

    Cons

Legacy code base is crumbling and new code is so far in the future that it might not matter. Belief that they are a technology company, but technology takes a backseat to everything else.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop thinking like a startup. Start trusting your people to do what they know to be right. It's time for senior management to step aside (don't worry, your options will keep you happy) and let the new, experienced staff show you how it's done. There's no reason to change directions every day.

I have been working at Avalara full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Lots of great, smart people with a fun, energetic culture. Growing rapidly with a great product to sell.

    Cons

This company is running 100 miles an hour without taking the time to develop a solid foundation. For a technology company, there are way to many manual processes that suck time and energy. There are also a lot of silos of information with little cross sharing across departments. Lots of talented people, but most are under-utilized and probably under-paid.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get rid of the idea that you are still a 'start-up.' Time to grow up and act like the grown up company you should be.
