I have been working at Avalara full-time (Less than a year)

Pros

I've been with rocket ship success stories, the bad news bears, and the in between. The difference with Avalara is the commitment and the competence throughout.

Cons

Be ready, a driven organization that grabs hold of your interests.

I have been working at Avalara full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Company has a vision and a plan to execute. The time is NOW to join Avalara. This will be a story you get to tell your grandkids about. Lots of growth opportunity for employees, but be ready to roll-up your sleeves and get busy. No room for analysis/paralysis.

    Cons

None so far. Everyone has been super supportive of me and the team I manage. Everyone -- Product, Engineering, Sales, Marketing are all working toward the same goals and share the same values.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great work and always live the values.

    Top-heavy management and insular culture

I worked at Avalara full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

OK if you live on the island; some groups are doing interesting things. Aggressive growth means lots of opportunitiy. Most managers are flexibile with schedules.

    Cons

All projects come from managment downward and never originiate with managers (at least this was the case in my group). Preferential hiring toward neighbors, siblings, children and friends who live in the island. High turnover. Culture that encourages towing the corporate party line rather than pushing and questioning why your group is doing what it's doing (to the detriment of the company). If you commute from Seattle, you qill quickly get sick of the insular Bainbridge Island culture and lack of diversity.

    Advice to Management

Trust the employees you hire; expand into Seattle. Lots of people from Kitsap County are working beyond their capabilities simply because you can't hire better people and entice them to commute from Seattle when job opportunities in Seattle are so plentiful. This could easily be solved by expanding the existing Seattle offices and allowing groups to work at either location.
