Pros

employees are friendly and work hard

Cons

Lacks assembly line structure, insufficient training, low pay ($8.50/hr.), no opportunity for advancement or pay raise.

Advice to Management

When you begin working, you will be directed to a station at one of the assembly lines and given an assignment to carry out. One of the employees will give a brief explanation and demonstration on what is to be done and then you are on your own. You will soon learn that the assembly line procedure is pure chaos. There are no established standards or procedures on how the line operates. For example, one employee will finish assembling items and then place them on the conveyor in stacks of three or six. Another employee will assemble the same items and then place them on his/her workstation instead of on the belt. Once that employee has assembled a large quantity of items, they are placed on the line all at the same time. This could be up to12 to15 or more items joining the ones the other workers have assembled and placed on the line. This results in unnecessary stress, especially for the person at the end of the line who is packing the items. This person is forced to scramble in order to keep up with packing the items while doing the other duties he/she is expected to do. Assembly line work should be structured in such a manner that it allows each worker to effectively perform his/her assignment as easily and as stress-free as possible. This is not the case at Avery-Dennison.
