I worked at Avid Technology

Pros

Great people to work with, learning a lot, visiting cool sites, "staying on top of the wave"

Cons

Bad management, people are overworked, a lot of chiefs with very few indians

Advice to ManagementAdvice

increase quality vs quantity; 30 sales people and only 10 delivery personnel, really?!

I have been working at Avid Technology full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Company has a great history as a leader in the industry.
Avid still has great products and product design and delivery teams who have passion.
Grass roots staff are the best, hardworking, experienced and many highly respected in the industry.
Great customers and an exciting industry to work in

    Cons

The whole ethos of the company has changed with the current management team. The wider team spirit is largely gone and communication between teams is very poor leading to duplication of work and confusion. The continual changes in organisational structure (often coming round full circle) have also contributed to the confusion and decline in morale.
The excessive number of highly paid Directors and VPs, often brought in as 'friends of friends' and then imposing their standard 'MBA management theories' without understanding the business is very disappointing.
Staff are scared of being fired, hence free speaking, constructive arguments and innovation is a long way from what it was. All communication seems to have to be channeled via line managers in 'controlled' fashion.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Re-build team spirit and better communication by returning to a regional organisational structure as much as possible. The current vertical structure leads to people not knowing who sits 5 cubes away and what they do.
Understand that Avid is not a billion dollar company. Staff need to be 'multi-tasking' in many areas. This also leads to improved job satisfaction with job variety. A team of 15 works more efficiently and with more shared experience than 3 teams of 5.
Avid is too top heavy, lets have less chiefs and more indians. Bring back the industry experience that has been lost through redundancies.
Look at the world wide markets and focus on what Avid has always done best: Solutions for the Professional Video and Audio media industries. Reduce the product line-up and get out of the consumer market. Avid has tried on numerous occasions to extend into the consumer products and have always failed, its a completely different market.
Make better use of the Channel. We have great Resellers in many regions and fail to invest properly in making them 'part of the Avid family'

I have been working at Avid Technology

    Pros

Great product line, smart and intelligent engineers, passionate employees, excellent benefits, flexible schedule, competitive salaries, on-site gym and cafeteria, and location.

    Cons

Increased off-shoring of engineering work, execution to meet business goals lack internal infrastructure to meet them, understaffed due to numerous lay-offs, employee activities is a thing of the past, cross-functional teams are driven by their own agenda regardless of other dependencies, no room for growth in engineering, do not promote within, good senior employees terminated or left, and the current senior staff needs an overhaul to get the company back into profitibility.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Walk the talk. Actions speak louder than words. Employees in general are extremely dissatisfied. Morale is at a record low and it's no longer a good place to work like it once was 5-8 years ago. Treat your employees as if they were your own children, wth sensitivity and compassion.
