I have been working at Avid Technology full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Outstanding product, still best in its class. Nice salary, and outstanding benefits. Upper-management was very smart, even if not always technically aware of what the editing products were being used for, they were smart enough to listen to those who did.

Cons

As Apple decided to declare war on Avid, and belts had to be tightened, management made increasingly poor decisions. Emulating other editing solutions for one, then letting go of the most industry-experienced staff.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring back the energy of a new company instead of resting on your laurels. Playing safe has helped Avid survive in name, though much less so in spirit.

I have been working at Avid Technology full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

The company has had great products. There are good people there who know what they are doing.

    Cons

Increasingly management has the "creating widgets" mentality. They don't understand or care to understand the industry or the customers. Many are obviously only planning to stay at the company for a short time and see it as a stepping stone to a better position at another company. They have no interest in the long term stability of the company. This is obviously not everyone, but it is a growing portion of middle and upper management.
The company seems to see more value in hiring from outside the company rather than promoting from within.
They also seem to be overly concerned about Wall Street. Any time there is a bad quarter you can guarantee there will be layoffs. They are mostly for show and the company hires more people shortly after.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get back to the fundamentals. Stop worrying about small stock swings. One the company is concentrating on what customers actually need and want instead of the latest gimmick, they we return. Stop investing in ancillary technologies that do nothing but raise the product prices without adding much value.
There are good people there. Promote them. They have more industry knowledge than someone with a freshly minted MBA.

    Pros

    Great customers
Remaining staff are brilliant, committed industry pros

    Cons

    No clear future
Hideous lack of strategy from CEO and head of Product Management
They have laid off 20% or more of staff each year since 2008 leaving giant holes in all areas. Still the CEO makes $8 Million in compensation. Criminal!

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Apologize to all the people whose lives you've ruined and walk away!
