Former Employee - Senior Test Engineer in Tewksbury, MA

I worked at Avid Technology full-time for more than a year

Pros

Still the gold-standard of the film and video post production industry. (Largely) dedicated workforce trying to made a difference. Avid was truly the "better mousetrap" for film and video editing, and at one time that world beat a path to their door.

Cons

Those who created the "better mousetrap" are long gone. Revolving-door management. No vision beyond survival. I worked for three different engineering managers in my two years with the company, the last having been employed by three previous companies that crashed. Near-constant threat of layoffs (which explains my short tenure.) Senior and middle management who know nothing about the industry and turn a deaf ear to customer requirements. Slavish adherence to release schedules...when I worked for QA (before it was outsourced) we were regularly "beaten up" in meetings with complaints like "you're finding too many bugs!" More cronyism than most companies - those politically connected stay for years, while energetic, passionate people with strong opinions are tossed.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Admit that you don't know the business you're in - this isn't another "widget" company, but a specialized company that still has a killer app. Get out of the offices and board room and engage your customers, while you still have a few of 'em!

    I have been working at Avid Technology

    Pros

    * work-from-home policy
    * employee discount on pro tools and media composer

    Cons

    * Bad leadership: Don't know what to do and insecure about making the wrong decisions.
    * Leadership doesn't have a long-term strategy, everything is a fire-drill and panic-mode
    * Many management bullies who blindly move forward without getting feedback on what's broken
    * Lack of collaboration amongst managers across departments or even in the same department
    * Website reflects lack of direction: messaging is inconsistent in voice, overly jargony and needlessly wordy
    * Employees stressed out from 2 major rounds of layoffs, fickle management, and lack of direction
    * New CEO:
        * Introduced himself to the company by scolding employees for bad processes, ignoring the blame of previous CEO (when it's the CEO and executive team who built the processes)
        * Was a board member for 6 years and "expected to come into a company that was humming along." Was surprised to find all the processes that needed to be fixed.
        * Lacks apparent intelligence in leading a creative company. It's about Art.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Sell the company and fire yourselves. This will be a long, slow loss of the money that you invested because you don't know what the soul of art and music are, you only know money. Take it somewhere else.
