Current Employee - Interim Leader in Lenexa, KS
Current Employee - Interim Leader in Lenexa, KS

I have been working at B. E. Smith as a contractor (more than 3 years)

Pros

The independent leader is attracted to interim work. Spending political capital quickly as a trade off to accomplishment and professional satisfaction can be hugely rewarding. The travel and logistics group is outstanding and very professional.

Cons

The interim leadership management group is overworked, disconnected and inconsistent with support. Performance evaluation is also inconsistent. Can make for a schizophrenic relationship with the client - you never know what your manager is telling them.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Plan a interim leadership training seminar with relevant content - and in a travel hub that is attractive to attendees. Bringing leaders to Lenexa KS to show off the home headquarters is a waste of everyone's valuable travel time.

Interim leadership with a major twist

I have been working at B. E. Smith full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

the interim VP of interim leadership is the gold star of what a project director should be. The interim leadership role takes one out of the overall political mine field that is rampant in health care. You are the "fixer' when you enter the organization. Most of the time, you are seen as the expert and this can be extremely rewarding and motivating.

    Cons

When I began working with BE Smith, each consultant was seen as a creme de la creme employee. However, BE Smith has become very prescriptive in their policies...with a great amount of "do not do this or that" instead of motivating their associates. The project directors are more interested in "selling" the BE Smith product, instead of supporting those who make this company successful. The benefits are weak, there appears to be favoritism over who is assigned positions, and the concept of pairing up the client with the appropriate candidate has gone by the wayside. The mantra appears to be....get someone into that position so BE Smith can start getting paid. You are not paid for excellence, and there is little information about why and if there is an increase. Most of us do interim work because we enjoy the challenge and the opportunity to see so many different processes...and take the best to each of our assignments. BE Smith has forgotten that we are what makes this company successful

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Research other companies who value their consultants, and look at best practices. Use the Interim VP of Interim Leadership as the gold standard for the other project directors. Not only focus on selling the project, but support those who make this company successful. You are ONLY as good as your employees. Revise how clients and interim leaders are matched...knowing that success comes from great chemistry, putting the right person in the right position.

I have been working at B. E. Smith full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    B. E. Smith is an employer of choice. There are multiple long-term employees who are extremely grateful for the opportunities provided. There is a great generational mix - both those right out of college to those who have been in senior level positions in hospitals across the nation.

    Cons

Excellence is expected. It is okay to make mistakes, but you are expected to produce. This company is not for people who are looking to just clock time.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue providing opportunities to your top talent.
