I have been working at BAE Systems Applied Intelligence full-time (more than a year)

Pros

Can work on some interesting projects covering a variety of different technologies. Very good for a graduate who doesnt know what to focus on in their career as they get a chance to experience different roles.

Free kit kats, custard creams and soft drinks, whoop!

Cons

- There are quite a lot of people that think they are better than the rest and strive for promotion too quickly, get promoted, think they are EVEN better and then lead to low morale in projects and a struggle to hit timescales leading to expected overtime work.
- Management seem like yes men, selling products and then throwing people into roles that they are not suited for seeing if you sink or swim.
- There is supposed to be career development but you can be placed on your own on projects you have no skills in which adversly affect your career even though you have spoken to management about where you want to be
- Not as suitable for people with 5+ years experience that want to focus on a particular skill, usually forced down management or architecture route, but this is going to change.
- Usual review round BS that you have to carry out.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

LISTEN to your staff and then general happyness in company will improve. Stop reorganising the company, management BS bingo is too easy.

By all means carry on employing clever people, but make sure they are not tools

Free kit kats are only the 2 piece variety, no expense spared, where are the chunkys and 4 piece ones, lousy cheapskates.

    Pros

If you are lazy and ineffective, then Detica is in a class of its own when it comes to tolerating failure. The free fruit, kitkats and sugary drinks do not make up for this.

    Cons

The company is run by young white English men, mostly Oxbridge types, who've never worked anywhere other than Detica. They perpetuate their tenure by only ever appointing members of their small clique to the most senior positions. Anyone who challenges them disappears virtually overnight. It is rare for any job to be posted on a notice board or for internal interviews to be held; most positions are filled by means of a "managed move". If no-one from the clique can fill the post, they go to outside recruitment rather than looking to recruit from within - so denying their long-serving people the career opportunities they deserve. The buildings, IT infrastructure, supporting services and administration are all in very poor shape.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop acting and thinking like the consultants you once were. Get some of your middle managers who know what they are doing to devise a strategy, and then sell it up and down the company and the customer base. Put a stable and long lasting structure in place to deliver on the strategy and stop re-organising every 6-12 months. Decimate the ranks of bean counters and ops people, then install some entrepreneurs in their place with the money you save. Invest in products and long-lasting intellectual property; not in delivery centres in some grim Northern town staffed by mono-browed journeymen who leave at 5pm every night. Attract some good sales people with a proper compensation package, and then sell sell sell.

A once great place for techies, but management determined to ruin it

I have been working at BAE Systems Applied Intelligence full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    - There's some fascinating projects being worked on. Network like mad and fight hard to get one
    - Young, intelligent and friendly workforce. Relaxed culture with good professionalism
    - Competitive salary and some nice benefits
    - Great work/life balance

    Cons

    - Technical ability is not highly regarded at review time, despite how crucial it is to Detica's reputation as a difficult problem solver
    - A lot of waste at the middle management level, lots of review committees and meetings to suck up chargeable hours that contributes very little to delivery
    - HR and Ops have too much power and waste a lot of time and money
    - Ops do an appealing job of aligning people with the right projects and balancing that with what people want out of their careers. They care about one thing and one thing only: utilisation.
    - Too much focus on bloated processes

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get your overheads under control. Detica used to be a lean, mean delivery machine.

The new Workforce Architecture must solve the problem of retaining deep technical knowledge and rewarding those that possess it. Let's hope it does.

Finally, the current strategy for moving all software development out of London in favour of cheaper locations shows a worrying short-termism in search of profit over quality. Abandoning the immense talent pool in London will not do Detica any favours.
