I have been working at BASF Corporation full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

BASF is very diverse for a chemical company, with a broad mix of products and sites. Many of the businesses were brought in via aquisition, adding to the diversity. Because of the size of the company and its growth, there are almost always opportunities to apply to new positions if you are willing to relocate.

Cons

Rigid processes from service platforms drive consistency, but some are difficult to use. Collaborative, strategic decision making can at times be confusing causing missed opportunities.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

The emphasis on career development is great, and should be continued.

Absolutely Destroyed Engelhard Corporation - BASF Catalysts is an empty shell today

I have been working at BASF Corporation full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

    deep pockets
    unasailable market share in Germany
    good process engineering skills
    focus on environment

    Cons

    bureacratic, cold, aloof, stifling
duplicitous - none of the statements made during the takeover of Engelhard turned out to be true
weak, dishonest, pathetic management - starting with the team that integrated Engelhard
If you're not German you have no future with the company at all
    Weak R&D
low-end, commodity business focus - inevitably will lose out due to rise of Middle East higher-end chemical businesses, US energy cost advantage, and aging, shrinking European market

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Bring in non-Germans to senior positions
Consider spin-offs of some overseas units, which are clearly poorly run (i.e. US operations)
Stop firing people on a regular basis for no defined reason
Avoid all these lawsuits you attract for HR and other actions

    Doesn't Recommend
    Negative Outlook
    Disapproves of CEO

I have been working at BASF Corporation full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I've been working for BASF Catalyst Division for over 4 years now and I can't come up with a lot of positives. benefits are good, that's really it.

    Cons

Working hard does not pay off at BASF. middle management definetly worries more about the squeaky wheel than the people working hard to make the place a success. middle managmnt is very weak and as a result people do not get along, it's a very malicious hostile environment and HR is not interested in solving the problems. getting a promotion is not realistic. the general consensus is that your position is generally a dead end. BASF doesn't invest in your career or show any commitment to keeping you around. instead they will hire an external candidate and require you to show them their job. very backward thinking.invest

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

invest in your employees. experience means a lot in real life industry and research. advance your workforce and bring people in at lower levels to learn.
