Decent job for someone in college but not for a career after college

Current Employee - Teller
Current Employee - Teller

I have been working at BB&T part-time (more than a year)

Pros

- Good benefits
- Good people
- Easy work

Cons

- Takes a long time to advance in most case, it's a policy that you must be in a position for 18 months before you can would be considered for another role
- Moving to another region it is unlikely to be promoted and instead you must stay at the same level or take a demotion
- A teller with a BS in Bus. Admin with < 3.0 GPA will find it next to impossible to advance beyond that position for this company within a year

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value the potential your workers have and allow people to advance to a role where they can get the experience they need to be successful. There is no reason a Iraq veteran with a college degree in business should not be able to get promoted from Teller after working a year in that position and exceeding expectations.

Great Place to work for a Commercial Bank

I have been working at BB&T full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

BB&T now has all the advantages of a large commercial bank while still trying to maintain a community bank reputation.

    Cons

BB&T now has many of the disadvantages of a large commerical bank and is quickly losing that personal feel that has always been it's main calling card and primary advantage in the market place.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have teams of associates that are perfectly willing to work their hearts and bodies to the bone "to produce more with less" assistance because the recent economy has made things more difficult for all businesses. They are more than willing to sacrifice whatever it takes to help BB&T weather any storm and shine as the "best of the best" They have trouble buying into this logic for downsizing departments and eliminating positions when Senior Management is awarded massive extra bonuses for saving the bank so much money. Those bonuses could have been better used to keep the existing workforce fully engaged. Senior Management needs to be more sensitive to the associates' feelings when they are losing regional employees to increase productivity and cut costs but are then told of Senior Management's massive extra rewards for "saving" the bank money and increasing the dividends for stock holders and are then told of vacation homes and lavish lifestyles those bonuses finance. It makes it difficult to justify the eliminations and cost cutting when there is that much extra $$$$ to award. Sadly, it is becoming difficult to equate the BB&T Core Values with the organization as it is now evolving. There is a great senior team in place. They need to pay attention to the mixed message they are sending to the associates outside of Corporate Headquaters.

    Terrible working in branches

Former Employee - Financial Center Leader II in Montgomery, AL
Former Employee - Financial Center Leader II in Montgomery, AL

    I worked at BB&T full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Life force health insurance and good training programs for your job.

    Cons

Financial Center Leader, Branch Manager, Market Leader. Depleted branch staff, heavy sales goals, cold call nights, sales. They laid off several jobs over the summer 2013 so check the reviews since then. Its resulted in poor customer service and 60 hour work weeks. If you're in the branches, its all about product pushing and sales goals just like any other big bank. They increased fees on customers rather than updating loan policy to generate income. Basically, I think BB&T is good to work for if your in the back office, but its difficult if your in a client facing position in the branches because you have limited staff and you have no authority to make decisions.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You have no idea what life in the branches is like. I suggest living off the salary of branch staff and then making the cold calls and sales goals for a quarter like you required us to do.
