Pros

The people were great and very friendly. There is no brick wall between the employees and senior management. I knew them all quite well, even on a personal level. When good work is done, it is recognized (just verbally).

Cons

Good/hard work is rarely rewarded financially. Sometimes the company cares waaaay too much about the bottom line, and not the quality of respect due to employees. Seems like the holding company has a little too much power over the company, considering it was highly rewarded and performed up to par in the given times.

Advice to Management

Stop letting the holding company pull the purse strings. You can't fire people and expect those left behind to pick up all the slack and still manage to have some shadow of a life.

They encourage passionate expression in your love for the work, whether that's in research, account management, creative, or other key areas of advertising. I've been there 15 years if that's any indication that they're doing something right. I've always been encouraged to try new things and express new interests to see if they are of real value to the company or the network. Usually, if they pan out, they are implemented and I'm allowed to manage that area. I find this an incredibly great way to encourage career growth but also personal growth and interest. This makes you an "owner" of the company, which is a smart move on their behalf.

    Cons

The crazy hours in advertising can get to you sometimes. You lose a social life somewhat because of that. With a company the size of BBDO, you sometimes can get stuck in the muck and mire of red tape and Sarbanes-Oxley compliance.

    Advice to Management

Keep walking in everyone's shoes. Communicate. Listen. Be a part of the experience from the bottom up. Don't sit in your office and speak to people "en masse" via email.

BBDO is the only big agency doing real creative work right now. It's the only place where you can get big agency experience and training while working on great creative campaigns. When you work at BBDO, you also get to work on really high profile accounts, which looks great on your resume. Everyone at BBDO is also interesting and pretty down to earth - pretty easy to work with. There is also a bar inside the office called Central Filing which is pretty sweet . It encourages everyone to interact and have fun with each other. Overall, a good place to get started in advertising.

    Cons

The offices are a bit drab. You don't feel like it's a very cutting edge, exciting agency at all when you first walk inside. It feels very corporate a la Ogiilvy. Because it's a big agency, you feel like a number sometimes. You don't get a real feeling of community, but I suppose it is this way with most big agencies. Turnover is high, and most junior account people feel under appreciated. But then again, I feel a lot of people consider BBDO as a starting off point to get some good big agency training and experience. A lot of people get frustrated career-wise here.

    Advice to Management

Be more mentoring to junior employees.
