Pros

Flexible hours, (relatively) high pay, excellent benefits even for temporary employees. Fair hiring process, and positions are quite flexible.

Cons

There is a lot of red tape that you have to go to. Work is relatively slow paced and laid back compared to private sector. Even got boring at some points. Senior Management are rarely engineers but are rather government lackeys.

    Pros

Good benefits and above average compensation (for the local market), capable and intelligent workforce.

    Cons

High management to employee ratio. Talent is squandered by lack of attention to the "human element - the number of human resources specialists notwithstanding.

    Advice to Management

Reduce management and human resources department by 50% and develop a true succession plan for all professional ranks.

  2. A nice secure place to work but to not have career aspirations.

    Pros

a benefits package that is hard to beat - 3 wks of vacation + 17 personal days
job security, especially in unionized positions
    very supportive of work-life balance
great place to work if you have a young family

    Cons

the union environment does not promote or reward star performers
many union employees are just milking the system
unable to get ahead, even if you consistently do a fantastic job
job content is not as exciting as in a private company, lots of paper-pushing

    Advice to Management

middle management does NOT know how to manage and motivate and engage people - please fix that or you'll keep loosing best employees.
