I have been working at BD

Pros

The company is generally regarded as a safe bet by investors. It has been steady through good and bad economic times.

Cons

BD is very bureaucratic, probably like many other large companies. The culture is that of sustaining engineering and does not lend itself to innovation well.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

BD needs to shake the high volume - low margin culture and get some innovative higher value products into the marketplace.

    Pros

    Good pay
    Good benefits
    Work with some great people!

    Cons

No respect for personal time! If you are sick you risk getting wrote up if you don't have enough vacation to cover your absence or if you can't find someone to trade days with you. Same as if you have sick kids or have to drive in from out of town in the winter! They would rather you kill your self and drive through a blizzard than call in.
Days off are not reallly your "days off" They require that you give all your phone numbers and will call you in if someone didn't show up. Also they schedule a lot of mandatory overtime.
Management play the favorites game. If you kiss their butts you can pretty much get away with murder but if they don't like you, good luck!
Have NO idea how the whole process works! They come in and implement changes and don't care that they made more work and that 99% of the time it doesn't work anyway.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees! You might find out that alot of us have some great ideas. Need to be a little more flexible when it comes to sick days and inclemint weather.

Limited opportunity to utilize seasoned skills or to add real value to the business, more operational than strategic.

    Good bonus program
    Good benefits

    Cons

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Cut some of the layers of management; stop rotating leaders; be more decisive and less consesus decision making; define a clear business strategy, fire unprofitable customers, build strong, consistent internal systems, procedures, supply chains, and financial analysis and reporting; and clean up the organizational structures to minimizes the layers of matrices ensure clear accountability.
