I have been working at BD full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

Great working relationships with peers, adequate pay and benefits

    Cons

Reputation of acquisitions and then shutting down plants. Seems to have a RIF every September. Lack of good leadership from the top down. Managers do not help you succeed, would rather berate the associate when they falter. They push how important ethics are, but there are many ethical issues within. Work-life balance leaves something to be desired, but it depends on your position.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Manage your headcount better during the fiscal year and manage non-performers better so that when you don't make your sales numbers you do not have to do a RIF - ensure you are always were you should be.

World in a bubble. Process over product. Incompetent middle management

I worked at BD full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

If your bag is packed and waiting at the door, you need to relocate to other sites in order to move up in the company. If you take this approach, you are treated well and salary compensation/stock incentives make up for it. The annual bonus is decent if your unit performs well. Medical is ok. The main perks would be if you work in San Diego or Franklin Lakes. Those sites are like palaces with many daily perks (food, gym, etc). If you want to sit in a groove, just contribute and keep your head low, great position (or sit and push a button)

    Cons

After all the years spent in Engineering, company has taken a downward spiral. Process outweighs product and most of the technical organizations are extremely top heavy. Waterfall development plus 10 months of paperwork equals zero ability to write or move software. Innovation is stifled. Mid-management is somewhat incompetent and uses force to push their employees to the point of not talking. A majority of sites have decayed relationships with other sites and getting to work as a team is almost next to none. You also have so many dotted lines, you really do not know which boss you report to. Come review time, any person can really bash on you even if you were performing well. Coming in, you were always worried if your job would still be there the next day and you were always reminded of it by your manager. Most of the individuals are waiting around for retirement. The others are waiting to be laid off with severance. Just a lose/lose situation.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Upper level management needs to clean house with the dead weight in mid-management. Provide a clear, streamlined process and stick to it. Focus on bringing product to market and not over-processing it.
