Good Place to Work.....but, perception is EVERYTHING

Pros

I really appreciated the openness of management to share financial information with everyone. It creates a sense of belonging and group ownership.

Cons

Perception is key. It doesn't matter how early you get in if people don't see you...what matters is that people see you stay late. It's all about how people see you not really about the work that you're doing.

Advice to Management

I believe there is a need to revisit the work/life balance. If management is working way too much...it trickles down and is expected of everyone. Not everyone is a work-a-holic.

    Pros

In the general assurance group, depending on which client you were on, you usually worked with very experiened managers and partners who willingly shared their knowledge with you. Most wilingly took time out to go over several topics and they made sure you undertsood.

    Cons

Your work week is comparable to the big 4 but do not have a big 4 salary. They promote 'flexibility' in the workplace however they have demonstrated that they do not believe in it. They want you to work 7 days a week. Fine, you may ask to leave early on a Friday for something person,. but you WILL be making it up Sat & Sun. Several managers and partners do not even know what weekedn means as they are emailing you on Sunday and expect a response! Some will even call you on your cell phone on Sundays! Family- what is that ? They used to care about it and be flexible when you had something going on. Well NO more. It's all about how much blood they can draw out of you. For the women out there, do not think of being at BDO if you want to have a family. They have already layed off 3 women who were expecting/gave birth.

    Advice to Management

RE-read your own statements on flexibility before promoting it. Update your severance policy AND remember that FAMILY is important to most people.

    Pros

You get opportunities to learn advanced taxation issues. You can't get the same kind of experience from many places. I enjoyed working with most of the people. They have a lot of opportunities to learn in the classroom for continuing education. They make an effort to make sure that you're happy.

    Cons

Although they like to market themselves as an alternative to the Big Four, you're still going to work you just as much. They're just not as honest about the time involved. As a tax associate, there were many weeks were my colleagues and I were working 65+ hours. They say they do 55 billable, but that really means you're at work at least 65 hours. Even at the senior level, there was no decrease in time.

    Advice to Management

Make Work Life Fit a thing that actually exists.
