I have been working at BHP Billiton full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

diversity and respectful atmosphere, good systems and processes implemented. good knowledge of ore bodies and options to relocate around the world.

Cons

a bit of bureaucracy, implementing change is a bit difficult. Difficult to climb the ladder in via meritocracy, its more about how many years you have rather than how brilliant you are.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should focus more in R&D and Talent identification/management.

Impressing the right people will get you far up the career ladder.

    Cons

When those people that you impressed leave the organisation your career stagnates.
Inflexible working conditions - was forced to cancel my own self-funded study, was given a hard-time for taking time-off to care for my family.

Clear out the long-time dead-wood in middle management.
