Some of the best young talent in the industry, but poor management conception of how to develop that talent........

I have been working at BHP Billiton full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Pay and benefits second to none and the reason most people hang around, the dictorial leadership have mostly moved out there is a hope the new management can change that image but it will take time and will they have the will power to see it through.
Some awesome young talent that shines, mostly great people to work alongside

    Cons

Too much process, lack ofopportunities to progress, if you haven't done it in BHP then it doesn't count, and it doesn't matter if your outside experience is far more extensive than the "BHP People" it still doesnt count. Too many "A" types make it a political cut throat atmosphere for those wanting to get on.
Some of their managers are poor and have a "me" type attitude and not a supportive and development of teams attitude, this is a shame due to the talent they have available
The market perception of BHP, they don't pay their vendors, cost driven, talk strategic partnership and relationships but don't walk the talk, hire and fire mentality towards vendor.....

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

See out the cultural change, open your eyes to the talent you have, both young and old and utilize the experience in house to mentor the amazing young talent, no degree does not mean no use especially with extensive years in industry experience

I worked at BHP Billiton full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

great training and structured pay. BHP greatly focused on training for all individuals, whether you were an admin assistant or a Sr. manager/VP. pay follows suit and they try to be in the top 75% of pay between other companies or similar and smaller size. This is benficial to the employees. Cafeteria plan has excellent food and is very cheap. retirement benefits are plush and worth sticking around for. Good company for sure

    Cons

no advancement, too many processes. The upper management lacked direction and understanding of anything shale, their experience was strickly offshore, this led to many misguided directions within upper management. The company wasnt doing too well with their newly acquired shale assets. They were too many processes and too conservative. cost them a ton of money and made many wells unprofitable.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    offshore isnt everything
