I have been working at BJC HealthCare

Pros

Many collaborating environments.
Opportunities to learn, develop and enrich your career.
A great feeling to know the work you do ultimately helps patients and families.

Cons

There are inconsistencies with how managers handle staff input. Some managers create an environment to have open discussions and decision-making and others say they are while their actions show quite a different picture. The perception is that minimal to no consequences occur for the lack of this skill set. Once enough staff leave the manager is finally dealt with; however at that point the organization has lost valuable assets in the people resources they had developed. In my opinion, this impedes a good organization from becoming a great one.

I have been working at BJC HealthCare

    Pros

Pay and benefits are average, however, they will reward the folks they want to reward. As a whole, the people of BJC are terrific (exclusive of leadership). Best leadership at (descending order): Children's, BJH, BJWC, Christian, BJSP.Financially stable- good place for security minded folk.

    Cons

Stay away from HR roles in all divisions- super high turnover and poor executive leadership.
Center for Clinical Effectiveness is a nightmare- unprofessional leaders, spread gossip about employees throughout org, retaliation is common, sabotage folks attempting to transfer out.
IT area leadership of BJC needs to be gutted if they ever want to succeed in the world of technology driven healthcare.
BJC as a whole condones blackballing of employees who leave the org.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Lipstein is an exceptional personality based leader- need to take the human side of the business as serious as you do the financials and capital investments. BJC IS IT'S PEOPLE. Demonstrate compasionate care of your employees as you would the patients- BJC has a horrible reputation as a vindictive employer in STL market.
It's time to transform IT, CCE and some of HR. Add some high powered employee advocate roles. Implement a zero tolerance policy on leadership performing employee character assassinations.

I have been working at BJC HealthCare

    Pros

Outwardly, BJC is a great company with charitable intentions and solid contributions to the community. Healthcare delivered is top notch with high patient satisfaction scores. Good work-life balance which makes up for the bottom-shelf salaries.

    Cons

BJC is more worried about growth and capturing the market and making money, despite being a not-for-profit organization. It's all about the bottom line, Cheap but incompetent employees rule the roost and if you are a poor employee, they don't get rid of you they "manage you out" often to another service line who then has to deal with your poor performance. Employees who question strategy or challenge the status quo are penalized.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Listen to your employees. Raise your salaries. If you want to hire employees with top quartile skill sets you need to pay top quartile salaries. Look at senior leadership - in a business like yours, certain positions need new blood. It's unusual for top management in a healthcare nonprofit to have hung around as long as some of you have.
