My experience at BJC HealthCare - Center for Clinical Excellence could have been a lot more positive.

I have been working at BJC HealthCare full-time for more than 3 years

Pros

Without a doubt, the levels of professional expertise in the Healthcare Informatics section of CCE were top notch. In addition, I found my colleagues there quite personable, easy to work with, unselfish about sharing their knowledge and always willing to help when asked.

Cons

Seemingly ever-increasing levels of mandatory bureaucracy: multiple time-management systems requiring daily, weekly and biweekly data-entry; weekly, quarterly, yearly and optional three-year goal-setting tasks; artificial sharing of daily missed goals with members of other CCE depts who for the most part probably did not have an understanding of what was being presented.

Open work environment (no cube walls) which very often interfered with productivity due to an inability to shield yourself from others' phone conversations and desk-side discussions with other colleagues. Sound-cancelling headphones helped some employees, but that shouldn't be an almost necessary requirement to be fully productive.

Inadequate compensation for the levels of expertise presented.

Inadequate health-care benefits, especially for employees of a leading healthcare organization.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Seriously look into some long-term methods of alleviating some of the above mentioned negative work conditions.

I have been working at BJC HealthCare full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

BJC is willing to take a chance on qualified yet inexperienced individuals and therefore provides a good starting place to someone early in their career. It is a large company, so there are typically advancement opportunities in the form of other jobs within other areas of BJC.

    Cons

The pay becomes relatively low as experienced is gained. In-position raises are rare. Merit raises are negligible and insufficient to cover inflation. Most times, the only way to increase your salary and stay with BJC is to transfer to a different job. It may be difficult for individuals without nursing or pharmacy degrees to advance their careers in a corporate position even though they are otherwise qualified and even though the position is not directly clinical. (IT/IS & financial tracts may be an exception.)

I have been working at BJC HealthCare

    Pros

It is a large company with a lot of opportunity. There are Nursing careers all across the spectrum.

    Cons

Being such a monstrous healthcare system you could feel lost in the crowd. Some people really like working for small companies and having one on one contact with upper management. In the 2 BJC hospitals I have worked in, the presidents have come floor to floor to have quarterly meetings with floor employees.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Focus on the point of care service. If you expect Excellent service, you need to provide the right staff and tools for that staff. Nurses and techs need to have a reasonable patient load to be able to care for them in a way that results in excellent care. It is hard to make your patients feel special if you have 6 of them.
