Great team, poor management, a bit of nepotism

I have been working at BNP Paribas UK

Pros

Great team, work life balance is realistically achievable. Reasonable pay, reasonable bonus.

Cons

Staff development is virtually non-existent. Management is not concerned about staff morale. HR's role is unclear. Between 2010 and 2011, 80% turnover in some teams were not addressed by middle or senior management. Strange place to work, having come from an environment where you're encouraged to reach your potential and if this wasn't happening, some form of coaching was provided. The concept of coaching is alien at BNP Finance but this is all offset by a great bunch of people.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Don't be afraid to get rid of dead wood. Take some interest in staff development and staff morale. Please pay people more.

Great name to have on your CV, salary very below par, weak senior management and no recognition for work done

    Pros

Good Job security. Good name to have on your CV (carries weight when looking for another job).

    Cons

Senior Management in UK are relatively weak. Decision making is slow. This can be a positive, but can also result in heaps of inefficiency and uneccessarily slow, as is the case in BNPP UK. Being a branch, you are still subject to the whims of Paris via Brussels. IT Service desk & facilities are the worst in class. Some systems were still not working when I left. Worst of all, a lot of the front line staff, including senior management simply gave the impression that they did not want to be there (stuck, because they can't find anything elsewhere?).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

A complete management overhaul is not forthcoming, nor the ability to replace unmotivated staff who don't want to be there. Don't give hollow promises to staff regarding their career that you can't deliver on, reward staff competitively against the market and provide a place for solid career development and advancement, and not a 'dead end' analyst role.

I have been working at BNP Paribas UK

    Pros

Nice balance between work and personal life. I rerely need to stay past 6pm and managers have a nice attitude towards employees' personal issues.

    Cons

Probably the lowest bonus in the city today. Lack of vision and investiment in technology. Not enough sharing of information resulting in knowledge loss when people leave.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Invest in the people more. The employees are your most precious asset.
Make sure they are recognized by their achievements and not only by time with the company.
