I have been working at BNY Mellon full-time for more than 5 years

Pros

Great benefits and work/life balance. If you have motivation to move up, the opportunities are there, however opportunities are opened by tenure, not talent.

Cons

Huge company that's easy to get "lost" in. Slow to change.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Good strides are being make toward career development and performance management. But just because a person is good a his/her job doesn't necessarily mean that person would be a good manager.

I have been working at BNY Mellon full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

7 hour work days in more departments and generous vacation time. If you like to do your work and go home, there's plenty of room for those types of positions. However management tends to work 50+ hour weeks.

    Cons

In IT the wages are less than the industry standards. Merit increases are also minimal. Even the best performers never receive more than 3%. Benefits used to be good, but in 2013 that has gone downhill as well; current health insurance plans offered are all abysmal.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Value your employees by offering better pay and better benefits.

Below industry average pay, lacks career growth opportunity

I have been working at BNY Mellon full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Hours are flexible, work from home, easy vacation scheduling. The company also values new ideas and innovation, and an employee can directly effect the enhancement of a product or practice.

    Cons

Below industry average salary, with no opportunity for bonuses or performance based raises. Yearly cost-of-living increase consistently falls below inflation rate.

Recognition at the company is dissatisfactory. While one employee can effect products or practices, receiving praise or reward for doing so is extremely rare. Coupled with no bonuses, this fosters an environment where employees lack any incentive to improve existing conditions.

Career growth is also mostly stagnant. The company has significant difficulty retaining talented employees, and the remaining workforce consists of many "lifers", older individuals who are okay at their one specific job function, and have no desire to go further. This lack of personal drive rebounds off management and fosters an environment where having ambition to grow is considered an annoyance.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take the time to understand what motivates your employees, and offer those motivations as incentive. More competitive pay and opportunity for performance bonuses would be ideal.
