After working on a two month project at BP, I can see why the accident in the Gulf of Mexico happened.

I worked at BP

Pros

Great cafeteria - free drinks and fruit provided upstairs in the work area.

Cons

Zero help from associates, since everyone there is a contractor and there is zero input and guidance given by management, who are gone 99% of the time in meetings. I felt thrown to the wolves.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give more guidance and provide more leadership, don't disappear for days and weeks on end and expect stellar results. Work with your contractors and be available to answer questions. Give more examples of the kind of deliverable you expect. Communicate more.

    I worked at BP

    Pros

BP has unlimited budget for the latest technology and software. The facilities were high quality which made it pleasing to work there.

    Cons

Positions that should be filled by permanent employees are filled by contractors with little to no hope of becoming a permanent employee. Contracts are renewed on a regular basis. Many of the contractors there have been there for years with no benefits or paid time off.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Pay attention to your contractors. Many are quite depressed because they no there's little hope they'll ever be brought on as a bp employee. I've seen many really good employees leave for this reason.

I have been working at BP

    Pros

Good people, trying to do the right thing, global work opportunities on some of the largest and most challenging problems in the industry

    Cons

Unfair press coverage, pay levels are average for the industry, large company decision making process, high HR turnover, too many staff people and insufficient line people

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Continue to simplify the organization, stay the course but continue to de-risk the portfolio, identify and promote managers who are trying to do the right thing
