I have been working at BP

    Pros

Great overseas opportunities; work/life balance is awesome, very flexible, there is more interest in whether you get your job done but not necessarily where you do it; professionally I have had great opportunity for growth in my discipline.

    Cons

In the past HR has seemingly viewed the employee as the enemy rather than someone to support. This seems to be changing with the new organization so we are hopeful. Bad external press and low base pay caused low employee morale in the past. Recent moves to rectify base pay off cycle are very encouraging now. Company is very performance-based so beware if you don't deliver! Although location is quite flexible (e.g. if you need to stay home for any reason), it is expected you will do your job so be prepared for some weekend and night work.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep up the recognition (monetary and verbal) of your staff to continue gaining back trust and boosting morale.

Why it sucks to work for BP as an engineer?

Former Employee - Operations Support Mechanical Engineer/ Project Engineer in London, England (UK)
Former Employee - Operations Support Mechanical Engineer/ Project Engineer in London, England (UK)

    I worked at BP

    Pros

Chance to get a wide range of experience and to be exposed to all kinds of equipment. Large budget for training during the project phase. Opportunity to build a good business network during your career, to experience different aspects of mechanical engineering while working with contractors, which in turn may help you in finding your perfect next job.

    Cons

Too much politics. Unfair promotions and very poor senior leadership. Failure to understand the importance of core engineering positions. Double standards between different assets in terms of benefits, salaries, promotions and career opportunities.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Learn from other companies which are more successful in this business. You have to understand that the most important asset that you have is people not platforms and although this is not an engineering company still the core of this asset is engineering discipline.
