I worked at BP as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Easy going culture, highly intelligent colleagues, lots of international roles, great facilities for work and things like its own sports club, out of town so avoid traffic. Salary rivals medium-level consultancies.

    Cons

Being out of town, you can feel detached from friends in London, the company has perhaps more opportunities for science graduates than from other disciplines.

    Advice to Management

Rigid two year promotion time frames can be too long.

  2. Grateful for a launch of a successful career with many opportunities for development, travel, and training

I worked at BP full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company is fast moving, not afraid of challenge or to redefine itself; the company culture is open, conscientious, friendly, meritocratic, with a clear internal promotion mechanism and a strong bias towards performance, safety, operational excellence, and strong technical/engineering skill set. The key to success is willingness to work hard, international mobility, and ability to get along with everyone from peers to senior management and the front line employees.

    Cons

Often too dependent on individual executive agendas, overly ambitious, tolerating behaviours and practices inconsistent with company values, unable to retain top talent in times of crisis or transition.

    Advice to Management

Alignment around clear and consistent strategic goals; be bold in executing the longer term view rather than focus on the quarterly meeting of analysts' expectations; make diversity a reality and find ways to retain and promote women and minorities, as well as those with non-technical/engineering skill set. In order to succeed globally, find ways to attract global thinkers and doers.
