Former Employee - Manager in Houston, TX

I worked at BP full-time (more than 10 years)

Pros

Nice buildings, campus is Eco-friendly, very convenient work locale, free parking, events for family, good pay and bonuses.

Cons

VERY political company, minimal respect for experienced employees joining the company, often times promotions or Senior Level Leader jobs (Level F and above) are only given to people who "know" the management team or who are telling the management team what they want to hear. Very British-centric for adopting ideas and valuing opinions. Americans on global teams are treated with an inferior positioning to their British colleagues. If you can accept this environment then BP is a good fit. Company is downsizing considerably due to the legal problems of the Macondo spill. Basically going to a skeleton work model for the US locations. In financial hardships right now.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Put more focus on Leadership training around inclusivity. The company only gives this "lip service" but does not demonstrate equality to American's in SLL roles versus their British colleagues.

A confusing, complex organization that could improve by stronger management and leadership

I have been working at BP full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

It's a company focused on improving but their approach has been too complex and bureaucratic. To their credit, they are starting a heavy focus on simplification to become more efficient and lean.

BP offers excellent benefits and has good compensation compared to their competitors.

    Cons

Not enough accountability at lower and middle management levels which causes lower quality leaders being empowered to lead teams.
Too little real diversity and a lot of pretend diversity & inclusion which is clearly not appreciated by the workforce.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Become stronger leaders by shaking up the middle management ranks in your business and functional organizations. Bring in more outside leaders and don't allow them to bring in their people from outside. Develop a balance of inside and external leaders and make a real concerted effort on diversity & inclusion.

You are really missing out on great talent because the focus is on measuring leaders on a personality and capability color scale. "Red" leaders do not actually make good managers nor are they better at execution. In fact, most of these leadership types cause more chaos and disharmony than the benefits of such "bull in china shop" aggressive leaders.

BP senior leadership needs to realize its 2014 and not 1984, so check in with real companies with diverse management in technology, financial, and service industries so you can actually be relevant in 10 years.

    Pros

Good benefits if you can hang on. Company is shrinking & doing pocketed layoffs. Morale is horrible.

    Cons

Middle folks stuck, so are women. No where to go up.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Retire all of upper mgmt & start over
