I have been working at BP

Pros

Pursuit of Innovation, strive for best practice in most aspects of organizational endeavor.

Cons

Middle management just simply lacking in preparation and fundamental leadership skills. Forced performance ranking breeding caustic animosity and indignation.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior management should not assume that tenure translates to preparation for leadership. Several managers are jerks, lack people skills and draw the ire of those that have had leadership/supervisory training elsewhere. The performance evaluation process is the most arcane motivational tool I have come across and appointments mirror the notorious methods of the british "civil" service aka "evil" service. Some staff are shocked at been selected to lead!

I have been working at BP

    Pros

-You work on a two week, rotating schedule, so you get two weeks off at a time
    -No real dress code
-Some leeway in how you approach daily tasks

    Cons

-You're away from home more than half the year when you factor in travel time
-BP does not cover flights from your home city to Anchorage (though the flight from Anchorage to Prudhoe Bay is covered), so you're stuck paying for that out of pocket, meaning your actual salary drops significantly once that's factored in
-BP is extremely unorganized, and as a company, has no idea on how to run an effective business
-Management is kind of a joke
-Lots of "busy work" which serves no real purpose
-Salaries are not reviewed annually, as they should be

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

BP needs to hire effective management who understand the value of intelligent employees. The management needs to review performance on some sort of annual, or biannual schedule. Essentially, the Alaska Exploration arm of the company (and, realistically, probably the company as a whole) needs to be entirely restructured for any sort of real efficiency.

    I worked at BP

    Pros

*Great pay and benefits, really unrivaled for the amount of work.
    * A lot of focus on work/life balance
    * Ability to take on projects and learn easily
    * Huge opportunities if you are willing to take them

    Cons

    * Little internal communication that makes sense. Senior management seems lost
    * Poor management at the mid level. They have little training
    * Crazy structure. One manager managing two other managers who manage one person each
    * So much overlap in the organization that there is too much double work
    * Did I say too much overlap?

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Senior management has a lot on its plate and that is part of the problem. The structure does not lend itself to streamlined work and it takes too long to make decisions. There are some exceptionally talented and smart people that are underutilized and frustrated. Hence the lack of trying over time.
