Great starting out company, great retirement company, but don't stay there in your prime.

I have been working at BP

Pros

What you get from being underpaid is made up for in the learning opportunities for me, if you're looking for a good grounding in the oil industry, BP should be one of the better places to start a career. If you're looking for someplace to retire comfortably for work-life balance, BP is also good.

Cons

Low pay, lots of internal politics and management are all talk and no action, and they do not retain talent. To them, keeping their own ricebowl is priority, all talk and no action. They love to have "conversations" but do not like to do actual work

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Do not be so short-sighted. You're trying to fight with other companies for good people, just because you're a behemoth doesn't mean you have to act like one.

I have been working at BP

    Pros

final salary pension, reasonable salary / home life balance

    Cons

typical big corporate bs and lack of customer understanding at senior levels, too internally focused

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

look outside the company more often to get a better understanding of how companies move forward, speak directly to more "frontline" staff - your townhalls don't get to everyone nor is it a format that everyone can participate in - meet real operators, doing there jobs and listen to their experiences, opportunities and concerns
get off the pot and do a material deal with either or both of a developing market marketing company (India / China) merge/ JV with a material owner of equity barrels

I have been working at BP

    Pros

I truly global company with plenty of opportunity to work abroad and network. Good graduate programme and a new leadership which is moving BP back to where it should be - a forerunner in the oil and gas industry.

There is a real opportunity for individuals to shine during this time.

    Cons

As the company is going through a transition some jobs will inevitably go. This is a good thing for the company but obviously not good for the individuals involved.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Keep talking to us. Keep listening to us. Walk the brand.
