Pros

Some genuinely good people working there

Cons

Senior management generally consists of 'friends appointing friends'
Massive blame culture (scapegoating)
Genuine enmity from senior managements to anyone that points out errors
Lack of expertise in senior management
Ignores employee needs
No communication or outright deception by senior management
Falsification of records to meet government requirements is commonplace
False data sent by individual geomarkets to regions and HQ
Substandard pay but only certain people get raises
No vision for the future
Massively understaffed
Direct lies told to clients when bidding and reporting on work
Expectation that a person only has the Company in their life
Ridiculous expectations
Everythign either has no priority or must be done tommorrow. No middle ground

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Actually run a company not a club for your friends that victimizes anyone who is not in your little clique

    Pros

    Product lines are often a good place to work. Baker Hughes' legacy is creating great tools for drilling, completions, etc. If you are in a position where such tools are being developed and implemented you can have a great career. There are also positions in the geomarkets in the growing market segments where there are similarly exciting opportunities.

    The benefits at BHI are fantastic.

    Cons

    Historically Baker Hughes has created great tools for drilling, evaluation, completions, and production. Baker Hughes as a corporate entity was basically a holding company which doled out resources to product lines that operated absolutely independently from each other. The competition between product lines for resources created a situation where engineering and sales teams were singularly focused on developing the best tools for their customers. But then several years ago the whole situation changed when One Baker Hughes was created. BHI created a region and geomarket structure to take the whole product offering to the customer. BHI was attempting to keep up with Halliburton and Schlumberger who had in their own rather different ways been approaching the O&G markets with an integrated product line strategy for some years. In the new BHI, the traditional product lines were still there but now they served the regions that were now in charge. The desire to match HAL and SLB was understandable, but the problem was first of all that BHI had no sustainable competitive advantage to compete with either HAL or SLB in the integrated approach that the new organization was supposed to bring. Nobody in BHI knew how to compete with HAL and SLB in terms off developing and implementing integrated solutions for the O&G markets. And then secondly what BHI was so good at (developing top of the line tools) was now pushed to the background in many cases. So will BHI pick up market share against HAL and SLB? My surmise is that it won't happen anytime soon, but only time will tell.

    So, there are plenty of good opportunities at BHI, but there are plenty of bad ones too. There are still many great challenges in the product lines and some in the geomarkets as well. I would stay away from most anything in the corporate group, it's just a mess. And of course talk to the employees (that is your prospective peers, not just the bosses) in the department you are interviewing with.

    It's very easy to get into a rut at BHI and to get lost in the organization, especially now in the new reorganized structure. In most departments you will get pushed forward if you are one of the folks who gets designated as "high potential," but it's often very difficult to make progress otherwise.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Find a sustainable competitive advantage and communicate it to your employees and the industry. And don't try to beat HAL at their own game - you will never win.

    I have been working at Baker Hughes full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    Great work culture, Good Teamwork and flexibily for working style.The Managers are understanding and allow subordinates to work freely with minimum supervision.This allows employees to have a good work-home balance.

    Cons

    Slow and undefined career path.Although the company is a great place to work, it can get a bit slow and stagnant sometimes.It gets undefined after a certain point of time and people look for more challenging oppotunities.
