Banco do Brasil – “Something good for Portuguese speakers with some education and few options.”
Pros
If you want to jump into the Finance\Banking Industry is a great place to start. Just don't stay there for too long or your career will end up dead.
It's a laid back environment with a lot of exposure to Brazilian culture, if that is something that you're looking for.
Benefits are good, 100% coverage, including family.
Work week is 35 hours.
Cons
It may sound a cliché, but management is totally dysfunctional. The reason for that is that upper management comes from Brazil for 5 years turns at the Bank. That creates a lack of continuity in leadership and in the long term planing and execution of long term projects. Every 5 years is a merry go round...
Brazil is very different from the US and the Managers that come from there have a hard time adjusting to the US culture, laws and regulations and US employees. That causes a lot of misunderstanding and lack communications between US based employees and Brazilian Managers.
Very little chances of career advancement for non-Brazilians at any level.
Lots of red tape, low productivity, low efficiency and low moral.
The IT dept is a joke, no real vision and extreme RED tape for anything regarding technology. Again the top IT Managers are from Brazil and they rotate every 5 years.
One very important thing to be aware is that Banco do Brasil is majority controlled by the Brazilian government (60%). Top management positions at the Bank are all political. Brazilian government and politics are well know for the extreme bureaucracy and high corruption, but things are getting better.
Advice to Senior Management
Hire some experienced US based and US educated senior Management and let them rule the ship regarding US operations and US employees.
