Pros

24 days of vacation, 9-5. For tech people - opportunity to work in large network environment, play with enterprise hardware. Not much more...

Cons

After year of complete lack of leadership, incompetence stepped in. People working here are unhappy, appearances count more than real work, micromanagement is a way of life at Barnard.

    Pros

colleagues are intelligent and generally pleasant, friendship and camaraderie.

    Cons

low pay compared to what you would make at a similar job at another college, (of course the pay is at non-profit level so it's not much to begin with), average to poor benefits, little to no career advancement opportunities, very small raises - 1.5% per year for good work, 3% per year for exceptional work. Very poor at supporting employees in taking academic courses, for a college it's amazing how they will do everything to avoid paying out a tuition benefit - many hoops to jump through and most likely you'll get a "no" in the end.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Try to make sure positions are staffed by competent and qualified people, perhaps set some kind of standards. There is sometimes a lot of variation in abilities and competencies for the same type of position across departments. Perhaps this could be alleviated if the college actually gave a real tuition benefit, the regime in place is set up for the college to avoid paying tuition for their staff who want to take academic classes. Give a proper tuition benefit to staff.

You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have Barnard.

    Pros

Tuition and the people. Barnard has amazing benefits, if you are in the Union. One benefit is full paid tuition and free dental and healthcare. It's like Sweden! A good number of the people are actually quite cool once they open up. Working with smart, driven students is also a big plus.

    Cons

The pay. In direct contrast with the benefits is the meager pay and the standard of living pay increases. There is little likelihood of an actual raise for many people as there is a lesser chance of ever getting promoted. Usually, employees toil away in positions for years only to have promotions given to outsiders. It's rare to move up the hierarchy. The family quality of the college has disappeared in favor of more dehumanizing and sometimes corporate practices of new management. It's fine to have corporate practices-- this isn't a corporation nor does it have corporate pay. This is leading to a high turnover of employees in departments college-wide.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Assimilate to Barnard's culture not vice versa. Also, don't profess to have the employee's in mind then make unilateral changes that affect employees you'd like to see leave. In some departments, employees are singled out for harassment via unilateral policy changes that sometimes go against the Board of Trustees. Once those employees leave, it's business as usual. Be very careful of who you ostracize and demonize Barnard, scorned employees can come back in the form of nasty lawsuits.
