I worked at Barnes & Noble full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Barnes & Noble is a great company to work for if you are a high school or college student. With flexibility and a cool work atmosphere, if you love books then this is for you.

Cons

Barnes & Noble has been late with the ebook market. They are playing catch up with Amazon's Kindle, and their business is suffering because of that.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management should take a more understanding approach to booksellers and leads. There is no room for theory X management in a laid back bookstore environment.

I have been working at Barnes & Noble full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

    -Benefits are good.
-If you like working with books it is a good place to work and outside of the Christmas season the customer base is usually pretty friendly.
-Compared to other retail jobs they do generally treat their employees well from the corporate level. The store level, as with any retail job, is more hit and miss.

    Cons

-Corporate management is a bit foolish, lots of wasteful "busy work" assigned and inventory management is poor.
-Smaller stores get inundated with material they can never sell, which makes the work of employees more difficult and books harder to find.
-Poor leadership at the top is driving the company into the ground though.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Employ people at the corporate level who have actually worked in the stores, if you don't already. Get better software developers and technical staff to develop in-store technology that does a better job of assisting employees. The inventory search system is ridiculously bad and slow.

I have been working at Barnes & Noble part-time (more than an year)

    Pros

The discount and some of the co-workers

    Cons

No advancement, unusually low pay, clueless management

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Stop hiring idiots, pay people a competitive wage, look at peoples skills and work ethic for advancement rather than who kisses the most backside
