I worked at Barnes & Noble part-time (more than 3 years)

Pros

This is a great place to work if you like books. I worked here as a part-time bookseller for several years while attending school. If you work full time and are good at your job, there are advancement opportunities. They're pretty good about raises. Very flexible scheduling.

Cons

Relatively low pay at first. Stores sometimes close, and you have to try to find a new job at another of their stores.

If you have to work retail, it's not bad.

I worked at Barnes & Noble full-time (more than a year)

    Pros

Nice to be around books; coworkers were pleasant, hardworking; customers were usually appreciative. As a full-time employee I received health benefits, a 401K, and paid time off. Opportunity for promotion was available if you could drink the kool-aid.

    Cons

Pay was terrible; schedule was erratic; usually had to work weekends and frequently evenings. Management attitude was inconsistent depending on the latest hot button from HQ. Expectation was to provide great customer service, but often without sufficient coverage. Then mgmt would question why you couldn't handle everything perfectly.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Increase hourly pay; treat employees with more respect; set reasonable objectives.

I have been working at Barnes & Noble full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Co-workers are generally smart, interesting, & passionate lovers of reading. Generous employee discount.

    Cons

Pressure on employees is now selling electronics, i.e. Nook. Appreciation of book knowledge is no longer valued.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Books - not Nooks - still pay salaries. While selling Nooks is critical, remember the majority of customers still rely on employees for book knowledge, not electronic.
