Barnes & Noble Anonymous:   (Current Employee)

Pros

I think that the benefits offered at Barnes & Noble are some of the best out there in retail. The medical package is affordable, even for booksellers working the minimum 20 hours.

Cons

There is little time alloted to train employees and the current training information isn't really helpful. There are too many projects that take away from customer service. No one follows through on anything.

Advice to Senior Management

Store managers need to take an active role in each store. Too often they seem to be distributing their own work off in the name of "development" and end up being responsible for nothing.

store mgr and assistant mgrs are expected to walk around with a clipboard full of hour by hour stats to access each dept into meeting its daily goals. If only these mgrs were held to an actual productive standard that other members of management are held. It is disheartening to watch a manager walk around the store spouting figures and not actually doing a darn thing to make the store more effective. Too much emphasis on knowing numbers and no accountability for actual productive behavior. Shame on you!
