High turnover makes easy going atmosphere hard to enjoy.

I have been working at Barnes & Noble part-time

    Pros

Very easy going atmosphere - Although this seems to be fading in an attempt to satisfy corporate norms

Flexible scheduling - good for students who care less about compensation, and more about being able to work when they can.

Forgiving culture - both a pro and a con, it keeps things from getting too serious but also keeps incompetent employees at a store that they are actively setting back.

    Cons

Very high turnover - bad market numbers and growing irrelevance means full timers and middle managers are being given an ultimatum: Cut your hours and benefits or find a job elsewhere, and many are choosing option 2.

Rampant micromanagement - Lackluster training processes mean the managers are always removing your responsibilities and replacing them with frequent reminders of what you are expected to accomplish.

Low pay - This is retail, so pay isn't going to be great, but there is a certain expectation that companies that value their employees will at least rise a bit above minimum wage, B&N is not one of those companies.

No room for advancement - As a new employee at a store there is little hope you will ever advance beyond your starting position unless your part of the first wave of hires in a new store. The main reason is that instead of promoting within the store, they will reach out and pull people from branches far away instead, creating a dearth of positions at the bottom rung, and ultimately affecting available labor hours.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Please learn to value you your non-management employees, your only hurting the company by making your lowest positions increasingly unfavorable.

I worked at Barnes & Noble full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Generally the staff is great. You will gain a lot of knowledge. I was paid well, but I am sure that tenured managers are being demoted or forced out.

    Cons

Upper management is very political. The company has changed a lot over the years due to economic factors. I worked at 6 different stores. Each store is ran completely different from all the others.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You should stand by your "We Listen Program" or get rid of it if you are not interested in knowing the truth.
