I have been working at Barnes & Noble full-time (more than a year)

Pros

The work environment is very laid back and most people are friendly. Work-Life balance is excellent.

Cons

Teams are often siloed and lack of knowledge sharing between teams. Thus, whenever a problem happens, a lot of people are notified unnecessarily which generates a lot of noise. also there doesnt seem to be clear direction from senior management.

I worked at Barnes & Noble full-time (more than 8 years)

    Pros

Access to books, and a staff that is smart and interesting. Being able to share what you love with customers.

    Cons

Increasingly, your book knowledge and customer service skills are deemed irrelevant in performance reviews. The only metrics by which you will be judged to are how many memberships and electronic devices you can sell. People are willing to hang on working there forever for low wages, so advancement is hard. Also, like a lot of retail, things are lean and getting leaner. The average staff member is increasingly asked to do more as wages stagnate and benefits are rolled back.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

The bad news is that you can't compete head to head with Amazon and Apple. The good news is that there are still a lot of people who like browsing and buying in traditional bookstores. Since you're pretty much the last man standing in traditional bricks n' mortar, hunker down and focus on the books.
