My experience with Bassett Healthcare was atypical because I was overqualified and, at times, misunderstood.

I worked at Bassett Healthcare full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

Despite my poor experience with Bassett as an organization; I support the Global Approach and outreach Bassett is providing areas of need that would otherwise go unnoticed. They have a progressive, yet credible approach in health care. Based on this employee's observations; Bassett Healthcare has some exceptional Administrative and Directive role models that support others in creativity, inspiration and motivation to offer exceptional quality care. This employee believes that it is imperative that some important names support the previous statement. Jane Hamilton, who started as a Registered Nurse; evolved into a mover, shaker and visionary of School Based Health. Dr. Koljhede (forgive the spelling), offers an equal, yet different role in the School Based Administration. Dr. K. and Jane Hamilton walked and talked in the same manner. They did not offer unrealistic jargon; rather they both possessed vision and practice in a passionate manner for others to carry out the dream for School Based Health and Mental Health.

If it was not for these two individuals and other peer co-workers at other school sites; this employee may not have remained at Bassett Healthcare with the limitations in Psychiatric and Mental Health Support.

    Cons

Bassett's expectations of their school based Mental Health LCSWS is to refer many cases out; resulting in a gap between effective "school based services," and the local County Mental Health Services. The County system, though providing the best care they possess; are exceptionally limited in necessary resources.and, for purposes of not over extending themselves; Bassett as an organization is limited in offering the necessary pharmacology-psychiatric support). Based on the lack of necessary Psychiatric Nurse Practioners and Board Certified Child Psychiatrists, Bassett is limited in offering the "Pharmacology-Psychotherapy approach for a variety of mental health conditions that plagues the school aged students they are serving. For instance, the local community is compromised in health and mental health care. Despite the qualifications and quality of care the local County provides; there is an enormous gap and compromise in services.

This writer and former employee of Bassett Health Care, previously held positions in the Human Services field that afforded a "Systems" or wrap around services approach that offered connecting to other systems of care in order to comprehensively meet the needs that presented themselves in more cases than not.

Although Bassett is not directly responsible in a neglectful manner; other workers that are employed as School Based Workers, and have a "Global View," would find themselves frustrated and limited in support from Bassett.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

As a "School Based" employee, an advance in management is not a reality unless an individual did not want to continue in practicing the category of School Based treatment. Perhaps, as the vision of this model of treatment became more incorporated and exponentially grew in size; one, as this employee would require the necessary job satisfaction of individual latitude, purpose and desire to practice in the school based field.

    I worked at Bassett Healthcare

    Pros

Great community and daily lifestyle living and working in Cooperstown, NY. They invested their time and money training me which is always a huge benefit.

    Cons

Administration sometimes seem so to try to rely on the naivety of their subordinates to move forward. All secrets came out eventually. They should learn from these mistakes.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

In order to have a believable community driven image, they should focus on maintaining their community driven values and most importantly their actions.
