It's a good place to be from... Better if you're technical...

I have been working at Battelle Memorial full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

* still has a pension and 401K (pension doesn't matter much anymore to younger staff)
* on-site gym
* great opportunities for tech staff to work on a variety of impactful projects

Cons

* support staff are significantly undervalued
* a chosen few advance by stepping on others and getting rid of them when they get in the way
* much better for technical staff than support
* largely putting all of their eggs in the government basket foretells a crash and burn if/when fiscal cliff happens
* used to be a good place to work - now it's a good place to be from

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Find a way to be cost-competitive w/ other companies - focus on increasing commercial business (or does Battelle really just want to be known for managing labs)

Benefits rapidly have been diminishing over the last few years, seems at times to be a bias towards male employees

I have been working at Battelle Memorial full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Flexible work schedule and okay benefits and the work is usually varied and interesting.

    Cons

Lower level scientists are more and more burdened by the actual work yet receive little reward and are the most vulnerable when lay offs are on the horizon. Educational benefits (ie, tuition reimbursement) is being phased out and is harder to obtain. Pensions have been cut back in recent years, as well as the matched contribution to 401Ks. Upper management are almost always retained and promoted despite chronic poor performance, while early career scientists are readily laid off when funds are tight.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Perhaps one piece of advice would be to force the retirement of those who are retirement age instead of providing them with obscene salaries, along with little expectation or metric that they will bring in grants and other sources of funding.

    No opinion of CEO

I worked at Battelle Memorial full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

Compensation is slightly above average. Work is incredibly diverse with opportunities in multiple fields located across the country.

    Cons

An older company slow to adapt to new ways of doing business. Like the mechanic who can fix anyone's car, but drives a clunker.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Management needs to focus on fixing it's house. Doing great work for clients...but not taking its own advice.
