Pros

-Employee support services
-Large Reach back to Columbus
-Above average compensation packages (not salary)

Cons

Battelle is shifting away from consulting services and focusing on its research. There are currently limited oppotunities in the Washington Area to have any career growth within Battelle.

Advice to Management

Encourage your middle managers to focus on employee opportunities and growth instead of cometeing with one another for dollars.

    Pros

    High quality people.
    Solve hard problems.
    Good charitable mission.

    Cons

What matters most is the bottomline.
    Little tolerance for non-billable work.
No clear path for advancement outside of Columbus.
    Quick to layoff un-billable staff.
Admin organizations in the company operate independently of those they serve.
Inefficient matrix management. Some of those who own the work do not work well with resource managers. They don't communicate and they lead their projects using fear and threats of losing work to "keep people in check."

    Advice to Management

Stop cutting into the bone. We're working our people to death.
Not everything has to fit into a box or in the cell of a spreadsheet.

I worked at Battelle Memorial full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Very interesting company and interesting work. Decent pay and terrific work/life balance.

    Cons

Benefits including vacation, 401k, bonuses and pension have all been reduced or eliminated over the last few years. This used to be a great place to work. Very secure jobs, but not great anymore. They have laid off 100s of people over the last couple of years.

Very slow moving company to get things done. A lot of bureaucracy.

    Advice to Management

Try reducing bonuses for everyone instead of just eliminating them entirely at some levels.
