Former Employee - Art Director
Former Employee - Art Director

I worked at Bauer Publishing USA

Pros

Bauer Publishing gives you a lot of opportunities and experience in the early stages of your career. If you work in the teen department you are basically responsible for 1/2 the magazine, in terms of design. You are really involved with the production process, and photo selection. Hours are standard and you basically never work after 6:00.

Cons

There isn't really too much room for grown on the art staffs. Overall the editor in chief are in charge of all the departments and it's rare that as an art director you get a say even in terms of design.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Loyalty to the company and hard work seem to go unnoticed. Although you get a lot of opportunities you rarely ever see a pay increase, and most starting salaries aren't close to industry standards. My advice would be reward generously the hard dedicated employees.

I worked at Bauer Publishing USA as an intern (less than an year)

    Pros

able to interview D-list teen stars
Sometimes got free stuff that the editors didn't want
Good look into the inner workings of the magazine world
    Other interns were really nice
Only had to work 2 days a week, but could go to events on off days (that was VERY rare)

    Cons

    Unpaid internship
    Mostly transcribed interviews all day
    Never met the EIC
Sometimes the editors would steal my work and pass it as their own
Just thrown into the job given no direction
No training on how anything works
Obviously just used to do the stuff the editors didn't want to do, didn't learn a whole lot

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Give interns tools they'll need to get full-time job at company
Seemed to be no communication between anyone

I have been working at Bauer Publishing USA full-time (more than an year)

    Pros

Working at Bauer teen group is great. All the departments are great to work in. I really enjoy coming into work everyday. It's not a stressful environment & everyone is pretty friendly and is willing to help if you need. Flexible with your schedule for anything like days off or vacation. Sometimes Friday you get out early afternoon and free ice cream Fridays are awesome! Also it's rare you get overtime! Great working hours and easy to get to by public transportation.

    Cons

Wish I got paid a little more but it's not bad for a entrance level job. Wish we had company events for holidays! Offer benefits to everyone not just editors.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    Keep up the good work.
