Pros

It is a solid company with many opportunities for career advancement. If you like a lot of structure in the workplace, you'll like it here.

Cons

It is a very large organization that is highly structured, therefore it takes more time to see changes or the results of your work.

I have a great deal of respect for this organization and their role in the health care industry. Keep your focus on the lives of the people we help.

    Pros

    Benefits are in line with other companies, locations are convienient from most parts of the Chicago area, facilities are decent, people for the most part are friendly.

    Cons

    Annual merit raises are becoming almost non-existent - in 2012 the raise for a "meets" expectations is only 1%. The company continues to have difficulty bringing new products to the market and is now turning to acquisitions to grow the top line. A large restructuring is currently going on, the company recently set aside 200 million dollars for "business optimization" - i.e. plant closures and layoffs. Layoffs have already occurred and will continue to occur in 2012 and 2013. There is almost no chance for promotion unless you are in the right "political clique". Even if you do get a promotion, the raise is only 3-4%.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    There is a significant credibility gap developing in what senior management says to employees during townhalls, etc., and what is really going on at the company. For example, management continues to paint a bright picture, yet the company is setting aside 200 million dollars for layoffs and restructuring over the next two years. Of course, this is never spoken about to employees even though it is a matter of public record via the recent earnings release. Most of the senior management is either new to the company or new to their current role and therefore unproven. Most employees do not have confidence in senior management and this is slowly working its way down to lower levels of management as well. With the recent 1% raises, increasing numbers of employees are looking outside the company for other opportunities, and with the local job market improving, more are finding such opportunities.

    Quality Department at Marion is only for Short Timers.

    Pros

    - The people are excellent. You will never feel like someone will backstab you, and everyone is eager to lend a hand.
    - There is a lot of established Lean/6 Sigma manufacturing in a massive facility; gives great experience to model for manufacturing excellence.
    - If you're smart and capable it will be recognized (not outwardly though) and management will not hesitate to throw the big important projects at you.

    Cons

    - The pay is on the lower end of industry standards. On top of this, addition of pay is slow (~3%/year) and there are no bonuses. That is until you reach the higher tiers of ranking, they get a lot of bonuses.
    - The advancement opportunities within the Marion site is non-existent, at least within the quality department. Expect to need to leave the company, or transfer to another site for advancement in career and any significant increase to pay.
    - Upper management got their through brown-nosing, and as such expect to be brown nosed.
    - As an engineer, the innovation, design, and critical thinking during projects and day to day work was extremely lacking. Most of the job was pushing paper around to accomplish simple menial tasks.
    - Almost no feedback to employees, ever. On that same note, almost no request for improvement opportunities from management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

    HR needs to seriously reconsider their compensation strategy if they hope to hire and retain top talent. The economy is slowly coming back, and soon they won't be able to take advantage of the desperation of bright young talent.

    Some managers are in their position solely through kissing feet, it makes for apathetic and incompetent leadership in some departments. While completely getting rid of this is impossible, do NOT have your young new talent come in reporting to these guys. It drowns their fire, and stifles all motivation.
