I have been working at Bechtel full-time (more than 5 years)

Pros

Lots of room for vertical movement if you're willing to join a project (in the middle of nowhere)
Respectable starting salaries

Cons

No matter how well the company does, raises and bonuses are almost non-existent. Forget about getting training for better positions. The only way to move up is to get shipped off to a project somewhere. Bechtel expects you to put the company first in your life.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Instead of pretending as though you care about your employees, try actually caring. Your employees aren't idiots. You can't book record profits and tell your employees that you won't be giving raises or bonuses because business is slow. Instead of just saying that you promote training, try to actually promote training.

    Pros

Ability to gain travel experience and work in diverse environments.

    Cons

The demands on employees can be tough on familys that are not willing to travel.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Encourage rotational programs to give employees relief from field assignments and increase benefits for families that reduce to 1 income to support the Bechtel employee uprooting his/her family.

I have been working at Bechtel full-time (more than 10 years)

    Pros

Even during economic downturns, Bechtel management looks for ways to retain its employees. For example, there may be offices where staff hours are cut but layoffs are minimized.

If you are a good performer, management is flexible in moving you to another city or country for personal reasons. There are also many opportunities to switch functions, especially if you are a non-engineer.

Opportunities to work overseas for people willing to do so. Compensation is competitive.

    Cons

Double standard for top managers who don't have to adhere to companies policies of treating others with respect, transparency, etc.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

More accountability for senior managers to adhere to corporate covenants.
