Beckman Coulter – “Great work-life balance, not so great cash compensation and growth opportunities.”
Pros
Indianapolis does a great job of allowing employees to identify and pursue their own interests within the company, for example - college relations, design projects with industry, and community involvement. The work environment is very laid back, and it's easy to maintain a work-life balance. Overall - the "don't complain" policy is the best I've seen - (When you work long hours, you don't complain - when you need some personal time - they don't complain.) If you're involved in R&D - specifically software, you'll be worshiped. The worker bees have exceptional respect for one another and work as a cohesive team. $8,000 a year towards a Master's with no commitment after the degree is a benefits highlight.
Cons
BCI-Indianapolis is not as well integrated into the Beckman family as other sites - this will change. There is severe downward pressure on wage and promotions - many employees with 8+ years experience and advanced degrees are still at the associate level - where other sites will promote much more quickly. In exchange for this, employees are given better workplace flexibility. The Indianapolis site has an incredibly flat structure, moving into management is difficult at minimum as getting experience with direct reports is almost impossible. The cube furniture is dreadful, and corporate IT finds a way to make even the most simple tasks difficult.
Advice to Senior Management
Management needs to step up wages and create advancement opportunities for employees. Performance Success Planning is a great idea, but needs to be reviewed by HR and used in planning for growth. Spend some money on the facilities - eliminate a cook-out and improve the lighting and cubes in the farm.
