I have been working at Benchmark Electronics full-time for more than 8 years

Pros

Some good people to work with, good financially stable company

Cons

No company driven employee development opportunities, critical areas such as corporate supply chain and corporate IT staff are severely understaffed, lack of leadership and vision at executive levels, employees have responsibility with no authority

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Use the S.M.A.R.T. method for goal setting, too many goals are not Specific or Measurable. Invest more headcount in critical areas such as corporate IT and supply chain to turn them into competitive advantages instead of "necessary evils".

It's a job, worst company I've worked for

I have been working at Benchmark Electronics full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Friendly coworkers, good location, 401K plan

    Cons

Little to no recognition. Very low or no raises even when performance reviews are very good and the company (especially the Minnesota division) is performing extremely well. Offices are extremely poor, old broken chairs, old equipment and software, ripped up carpet, loud, dirty, air handling system looks like they don't use filters, no empowerment given to lower and middle management or individual contributors. Average benefits. Starting salary o.k., but it will have to last you for years. Lost incentive after first two years to even try and overachieve. Lots of wasted skills and resources due to ineffective top down management.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Basic work environment and employee expectations of working comfortably should be a top priority! It's coming down to safety and health issues. Empower your managers and individual contributors to make decisions and positive changes. Recognize and reward for extra efforts beyond your arbitrary bonus that you use in place of raises. Guess what? We noticed! And lastly, stop putting all the emphasis on metrics. It has gotten out of hand. The "numbers" have become more important than the work itself, the customers or the employees. Dept. Managers in response to the overwhelming upper level management pressure are doing everything possible sometimes beyond reason and common sense just to "make the numbers". Understandable as that is the only potential way to get a cost of living increase by way of a bonus. Plant location management must be given the authority and trusted to control manufacturing as that is their expertise. Upper level finance management in Texas need to back off and watch what empowered employees and plant management can really do if only given the opportunity and recognition when deserved.

I have been working at Benchmark Electronics full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Close to home; some great peers to work with

    Cons

Drags feet in giving performance evaluations & merit increases are rare; only one major customer so company succeeds or fails based upon how customer does. it's a roller coaster ride; furloughs happen on a regular basis. Lots of unhappy stressed out employees

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

You don't need a 4-year college degree in most positions & previous work experience should account more. Why can't you find quality people
