Pros

The firm provides new entrants into the industry a platform for success. Specifically, the freedom to cultivate business in all areas of New York provides new brokers with many opportunities to achieve success.

Cons

The lack of benefits and uncertain financial security, but this is common in the commercial real estate brokerage industry.

Advice to Management

More company sponsored get-togethers and or events would promote a greater sense of team unity and also serve to boost morale in the firm.

    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Besen & Associates as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

From what I see. Interns are given a range of opportunities to explore all aspects of real estate to their fullest capabilities. As long as they can complete the work, they are given the responsibility. The environment at Besen is also very friendly, except for a few brokers, but that is simply their nature. Almost everyone in the office will approach you and introduce themselves kindly. Additionally, the environment for interns is very lax without a designated internship termination date, clock in time or clock out time. The time you spend at the office depends on your own vocation. Lunches are also unmonitored. Dress is business casual. Overall, they will give you small bitesized projects at first, but as you progress you will receive greater and greater responsibility. Office is a much more relaxed environment than I am used to and I am enjoying it. People are kind and won't give you trouble unless you ask for it. Matt Slonim Jared and Valentina work very hard to prepare every week to present literally a 2 hour real estate course on whatever they designate the topic of discussion to be. It's great for anyone who is interested in Real Estate in general and absolutely covers topics undiscovered by current interns not working in specific divisions. Good work!

    Cons

Unstructured work load creates a sense of dullness at times. Intern desk positions being spread out creates a disconnect. Few intern outings. No stipend, salary or transportation provisions provided - you are essentially volunteering.

    Advice to Management

At least provide a train card or monthly metro card to interns - some are commuting from more than 3 hours away. Set interns closer to create a greater sense of unity. Do not give some interns an amazing private office while others have cramped desks. Try to make intern lunches consistent since they have sometimes been a bit last minute announced. Give Valentina a Medal of Honor for dealing with us. If you won't provide a stipend at least PROVIDE A TRAIN CARD OR METRO CARD.
