Former Employee - Senior Developer in London, England (UK)

I worked at Betfair full-time (more than an year)

Pros

Magnificent offices, a good, technology oriented company culture, dynamic, friendly, fun, not in the least boring. Good equilibrium work / life, culturally diverse, found a few new best friends there.

Cons

Upper management with no experience or flair to run an IT department. Junior staff thrown willy-nilly at jobs they're unable to perform at high standards, and the seniors are mostly there to clean the mess. Very cost-conscious, no pay hikes, tendency to outsource a lot; cliquey in some teams.

Advice to ManagementAdvice

Take more care of your senior staff, or they will eventually leave - and you need them.

Current Employee - Developer in London, England (UK)

I have been working at Betfair full-time (more than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Interesting and complex technical challenges
    - Good opportunities to learn for people earlier in their careers
    - Good career ladder into management

    Cons

    - Feels like there's a glass ceiling beyond a certain point unless you want to go into management
    - Often feels like we're trying to move in too many directions at once
    - The company is trying to be a bigger company than it needs to be - feels like there are too many distracting HR fads (e.g. engagement surveys).

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Ditch the management fads, especially meaningless engagement surveys, that detract from getting good product out of the door.

I have been working at Betfair full-time (more than 3 years)

    Pros

I have to say that in Betfair the work environment is original, there are many smart people and most of the time the atmosfere is positive and professional.

    Cons

The HR organisation is ineffective, redundant, antiquate and that reflects in staff being disillusioned about how the company operates internally. The company focuses more on cost cutting than growing its staff professionally, no career plans, low salaries means the best will leave the company.

    Advice to ManagementAdvice

Get a real shake up into the HR, including compensation, talent management and career planning inside the company.
